OnePrice Taxes has gone through a major update since last year. They have updated their online tax software interface, decreased their customer service wait time, added live chat support and expanded their online tax instruction. They also offer among the lowest-priced packages; it's only $14.95 for federal and state filing combined. All returns, whether they are 1040EZs, simple 1040s or 1040s with itemized deductions, are only $9.95 to eFile.
We did notice that the software was easier to use this year. We found it effortless to enter W-2 data and personal information. It can create simple returns easily and primarily is a fill-in-the-blank interface with links to further explanations should you need them. We did run into a few problems though. For example, our refund amount was over the expected amount. Suspecting an entry error, we went back through our information to verify that we entered the correct numbers and could not find any errors. It appears that the income reported on a 1099-MISC form was not handled correctly. Though a larger refund seems exciting, it is far from exciting when the IRS notices the error. We also had a difficult time logging in. Every time we would try to sign back in it would say our email was already in use by another user. This was especially frustrating since we did not receive a welcome email to verify our account information either.
This tax preparation service provides a few timesaving features such as the ability to import data from returns stored by OnePrice Taxes or TurboTax. It can also help you decide whether standard or itemized deductions are more beneficial for you, and it includes a refund/owe meter so you can watch your progress as you create your return. However, it does not include things like a mobile app or the ability to import your W-2s.
This year OnePrice Taxes added chat support, and you can of course contact them by email. However, they do not post a telephone support or fax number. Last year they reported to answer their standard service emails in 5-7 business days. This year they report to be able to answer your questions in one business day, which is a significant improvement. Their FAQs and online tax help sections are also quite limited. They post a blog but they do not post often and do not publish many articles about complex tax topics.
If you have a simple federal and state return, OnePrice Taxes pricing is tough to beat at $14.95 total for both or just $9.95 for state eFiling. In addition, if you are unemployed they will file federal and state for you free, and they are offering a $3 discount if you let them add one post to your Facebook. This online tax software is affordable and can handle simple filing. However, if you have a more complex return with capital loss carry-overs, multiple 1099s, small business expenses with employees and so on, we recommend one of our higher-ranked products.
Pros
Using OnePrice Taxes you can file your federal and state returns for only $14.95, regardless of the type of 1040 you file.
Cons
They do not provide telephone support, and you have to contact them directly if you want to file business taxes since their online software is not well suited to handle business taxes.
The online tax preparation service is affordable and can handle simple filings well. If you have a complex return we recommend one of our higher-ranked products.
